Setting: Inaba, Japan.
Two years after the "Hanged Man" incidents that had occurred in the rather small rural town "in the middle of nowhere in Japan", Inaba. The town had gained quite a bit of popularity since then, thanks to all the media's constant attention on the case these past three years.
Since the case has been claimed resolved by the national police department, days of constant downpour from day to night were now rather rare. That was, until about two days back. Dark shrouds of dark clouds had emerged into view above the town, and now drops of rain pitter-pattered against whichever surface it hit.
This downpour, it just kinda happened, without notice, without reason. It seemed to just happen so suddenly overnight, not even the weather officials couldn't have predicted such from happening, nor could they tell the cause..
How could this have been? Was it just a coincidence, or was there more to this than what could be seen in the screen? There was just no telling when the pour would give, nor the causes, or the results.
---
Setting: ? ; Past.
Quick, constant panting was all that could be heard, in the midst of the white, hollow forest. A red hooded figure in the midst of the forest seemed to be running, running in fear from the unknown. Her footsteps were muffled by the shaded white snow that she ran on,
The day was dark, wherever the red figure turned to, their sight was limited, and so were their options in their current situation..
The figure was being chased, chased by creatures of the shadows. At first glance, these were the common creatures that were to inflict harm on the innocent in their world, creatures of Grimm, of negative emotion, savage, who wouldn't normally stop in attempts to kill their typical human target, but, this was different, they were different, all of this, it wasn't familiar to her at all. These thing were the creatures of Grimm, but... they weren't at the same time..?
These creatures, they were different than what anyone could remember, resembling the common Grimm of their world, there was something rather strange about these ones. These "Grimm" were stronger and faster than any typical Grimm that a Huntsman would encounter in a typical mission, and with that, they seemed to be near impossible to kill. They were different, the way they looked, there seemed to be some sort of masks on the creatures. Masks varying in shapes and sizes,
With an over-sized scythe in hand, the figured ran, and ran, and ran, until, everything went black, and everything started to fade.
---
If anyone were to watch the rumored Midnight Channel, a former-popular rumor that had been the talk of Inaba a few years back, this is what they would see.
A red caped figure, running and being attacked by shadow-esque creatures. As bizarre as it was, the events that were shown on the TV were reality, and were the events that lead to the figure being where they were now behind the screen.
As soon as they would wake, they would wander, unknowing of what danger could, or would lie beyond them.
"This is a drag. Work again this late at night?" Yosuke yawned again, trying to avoid his tiredness. It was his fault for doing this anyway; he had a choice of when he would work his shift, and he just had to go and choose the late-night closing. Then again, that made it easier for him to go to school and help the Investigation Team with all of the murders that were going on. Or at least, it was. Now, the murders were closed. They had found the true culprit, saved the world from Ameno-Saga-what's-it, and life had returned to normal.
Kinda.
He sighed as he looked over at the television that nestled itself on one of the display cases. Thinking ahead in case something like this had ever occurred again, Yosuke had the brains to tell Teddie to keep the exit open on the other side; or in case someone was stupid and randomly fell into it. Like that would ever happen. Still, this late at night, it was hard to not think back over the past events and think about the rest that had changed.
First of all was Yosuke himself; he had grown as a person, had started to realize things about himself that he was both ashamed of, and that he was proud of as well. The second was the fact that Yosuke, who had initially been pretty much friendless, had finally found people he could be a part of a group with. Chie, Yukiko, Kanji (as much as he still was totally /creeeeeeeped/ to be around alone), Rise (who was still hot), Naoto, Teddie (hell, the bear lived with him for crying out loud), and finally his Aibou.
That was something that made him sad and think back too. See, the truth about Narukami Yu was the fact that Yosuke had felt a connection to him right whenever he came into Inaba. The second he showed up from the big city, Yosuke thought that maybe he had someone that he could connect too and speak with as well, and boy was he ever right. He hadn't even came close to thinking how important their social links would become, nor how important the guy himself would be to him and his life. The reason he called Yu his 'aibou' was because he truly was his partner. He wasn't just some friend that could be discarded - instead, Narukami was... well, he was a partner. Someone Yosuke could always go too no matter what, as embarrassing as that would sound to someone who didn't know who they truly were.
And then that brought back to memory the murders. That brought back.. He swallowed the lump that had grown in his throat, bit back the slight, strangled cry that wanted to rip itself from his chest. That brought back the memories of the deaths, and the close deaths that they themselves had all faced.
And Saki-senpai...
She was the woman that he had fell in love with. Truly in love with. Her smile was like the sun illuminating his existence. She was nice to him, filled him with some kind of emotion, gave him some kind of attention. Hanamura was terrified of being alone... but with her, before he got close to everyone else, he wasn't. She always smelt of her perfume, her cheerful (yet demure) personality both a happy thing for him and customers. He was totally head-over-heels for her.
But then she died. Shoved into one of those damned televisions, her Shadow waiting on the other side to destroy her.
It was because of her he first went into the television, because of her he decided to do something more with his life. His Shadow had already slammed him in the face that it was something to do in this hell-hole of a shitty-calm life town, but.. he couldn't stop the thought that he really did go full force because of his love for Saki-senpai.
...And then, entering into the television, he realized how she truly felt... How she really...
He shook his head again, an anguished shout starting to build up inside him again. Gripping the handle of the mop, he shoved with all of his might, nearly twisting his elbow in the process, and that was enough to wake him out of his stupor.
"What are you thinking, Dumb-suke?" he chided himself. "You still have work to finish. After you get finished here, you can go home, kick Teddie in the ass for stealing the covers, and go to bed."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another small while had passed; not too long, but enough for him to finish the rest of his chores. Making sure the store was locked down, Yosuke headed home from the Junes.
The bike ride started off smooth as they always did. He closed his eyes for a brief moment, enjoying the feel of the wind rushing past his face as he pedaled faster towards his house. "Nothing like a bike ride to get you feeling up to par," he stated aloud to himself, his signature grin and wink coming to his face.
Still, something was eating at him. It wasn't everything that was going properly, of course. If anything else, that was a relief.
Though at the same time, it was a big worry. They thought that defeating Izanami was the best thing that they could do, but the gateway to the Shadow World had never truly closed...
He shook his head of his thoughts again, changing his course to head towards one of the parks. Maybe he just needed some alone time to try to figure things out.
Checking his watch, he realized that it was almost midnight. Clouds started to roll in overhead, the darkness becoming almost unreal. A soft droplet of water landing on his nose almost had Yosuke scurrying and falling on the pavement.
"Yo, Yosuke. Calm down, nothin' like this is gonna hurt ya." Still, the worry was still full in his mind, causing it to grasp at straws...
They hadn't watched the midnight channel since the last night, since the time they stopped everything - or at least thought they did - with Adachi and the rest. What was this nagging feeling? Were they missing something?
....
Pedalling harder, making up his mind, he headed up the hill to go home.
----
A blank screen. If you look into it at midnight on a rainy day, your soulmate will appear. What hogswash. They all believed it until they started realizing everyone was watching the same person... that, and Narukami had almost had himself dragged into a television by reaching out and touching it.
Unexpectedly, he, Aibou, and Chie had ended up at Junes... and that was where they found out the real truth.
No, no no no. This couldn't be real, he was just freaking out for no reason. He was about to prove to himself that there wasn't anymore dangers in the television.
He didn't even realize he was holding his breath as the clock seemed to creep towards midnight. Eyes narrowed slightly as he continued to look, dread remaining set in his heart. It wasn't real. There was nothing wrong. He was just overly worried since he had grown so used to so much danger in such a short amount of time.. and the silence had truly grown... unsettling.
----
Blank screen blazed into life, the static slowly disappearing to reveal a young girl. A girl running from shadows, scythe reaching out to try to cut them down. A young girl in a red hood...
He stared at the screen, unable to do anything for a few moments, at least until he understood the gravity of the situation.
It had started again.
Not even hesitating , he picked up his phone, calling Narukami. "Dude, you need to check the Midnight Channel."
"... Yos---"
"CHECK THE MIDNIGHT CHANNEL."
Click.
He stood, pacing back and forth as he watched the screen slowly fade to black. They needed to get back into action. If Yu saw it, everyone would come flocking back. They needed to go and save this new girl. He wasn't going to have her die too...
After seeing what was displayed on the screen, the silver-haired male knew what was at stake here. All this, it was all too familiar. He knew what to do; once again, it was time to get the Investigation Team back together.
First thing after the screen went blank, Narukami would reach for his flip phone, and would call his Aibou, who was one of the first listed on his speed dial.
Another visit, another case, it seemed to be; it wasn't uncommon for something out of the ordinary to occur when the hero planned to visit the small rural town to visit his friends and family for more than a day or few. It was a good thing he already had his things packed.
Ring, ring, come on.. pick up already..
And the first thing he heard as his Aibou answered, was panic, by none other than whom he was calling, but, his reaction was understandable. For two years, was a time that nothing like this had occurred, it felt almost alien. But, Narukami wasn't one to show his worry, as leader, he had to show his levelheadedness, and attempt to communicate to those around him that things would turn out for the better. He let out an exhale, calling Hanamura's until his little panic had come to a halt; he wouldn't let the intensity of the situation get to him.
❝Yosuke,❞ he said, in a calm manner. ❝Calm down, we'll get to this as soon as we can. I'll come down there to visit first thing in the morning. We don't know what to expect, this may not be like the other times. We shouldn't rush in there in the middle of the night. Let's get the team together during the day, and discuss our game plan first thing in the morning. I'll call Kanji, Naoto, and Rise, and you get Chie and Yukiko to meet with you and Teddie at the usual spot, alright?❞
